Temple of Tooth Relic

The present Temple of the Tooth is situated in Kandy.  The Kandy is situated in the middle of the Udawatte forest on the east and the Hanthana mountain range on one side and the Bahirava mountain on the other.  Kandy is also a World Heritage Site.  King Sena Sammatha Wickramabahu of the Gampola royal family is considering to be the founder of the Kandy Kingdom.

The left tooth relics of Gautama Buddha are house in the present Temple of Tooth.  Due to this, the Temple of the Tooth, as well as the Kandy, has become very sacred.

The Temple of the Tooth was first built by King Wimaladharmasuriya I.  However, the Temple of the Tooth was destroyed by the Portuguese.  Thereafter the present Temple of the Tooth is built by King Sri Weera Parakrama Narendrasinghe.  Since then, even the Nayakkar dynasty Tamil kings who ruled the Kandy Kingdom have protected the Temple of the Tooth.  The main reason for this is the belief of the people that the sacred relics and the relics of the bowl should be in the possession of the king to obtain the kingship of the country.

The present front porch is built by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe.  The presents Temple of the Tooth consists of three parts name by the Palace of the Elders, the Patthirippu, and the New Palace.

The protected areas of the Sacred Tooth Relic are Aluth Nuwara, Meda Mahanuwara, Hanguranketha, Nilambe Nuwara, Senkadagala, and Gale Nuwara.

The Tooth Relic is worshiped daily by the monks of the Malwathu and Asgiriya sects.
